Kalamata (Greek: Καλαμάτα) is a coastal city in the southwestern Peloponnese, capital of the Messenia regional unit and the second most populous city of the Peloponnese after Patras. Lying along the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf and backed by the Taygetus mountain range, the municipality covers 440.3 km² and recorded 72,906 residents in the 2021 census, with 58,816 in the city proper — making it a major port and commercial hub of the region.
First recorded under its modern name in the 10th century, Kalamata passed through Byzantine, Frankish (Villehardouin), and Ottoman rule before becoming, on 23 March 1821, the first Greek city liberated in the Greek War of Independence. Its historic core preserves the medieval Castle of Kalamata and the old town’s Ottoman-era quarters, while today the city is internationally known for its silk textiles, distinctive Kalamata olives and olive oil, and its role as the gateway to Messenia’s beaches and archaeological sites.
